Fears that entries might be low at the recent Blueskin Bay spring show were unfounded, with a near-record number of exhibits.

“We’re thrilled with the entries, more than we expected,” Blueskin Bay Garden Club president Janice Henderson said.

With almost 900 entries, the show was voted an outstanding success by club members who organised it, the public and the judges.

“It’s been a good year for daffodils,” section judge Bert Hill said.

His overall best bloom, from a strong line-up, was a pure yellow trumpet, Apollo Gold, entered by Helen Jones, of Dunedin.

Shrubs judge Mark Brown praised the standard, adding “the rhododendrons were beautiful and in very good condition”.

His section best, a pale pink camellia, went on to win the award for the show’s champion bloom.

It was exhibited by Marg Meder, of Doctor’s Point.

Entry was free to exhibitors and those who came to admire the flowers, the club relying for income on raffles, book sales and a plant stall.

A large selection of plants for sale was snapped up by keen gardeners and seller Lynne Carlyle said it was one of the best stalls the club had had at a show.

“We’ve sold hundreds of plants,” she said.
