Rugby: Nicknames to get chop

Say goodbye to TJ, Nisbo, JP, Sumo, Foxy, Marshy, Smithy, Coops and Kamo.

Step forward Tony Johnson, Grant Nisbett, Jon Preston, Scotty Stevenson, Grant Fox, Justin Marshall, Ian Smith, Matthew Cooper and Ian Jones.

Sky bosses and the IRB have asked Sky's commentators and pundits to stop using each other's nicknames at this year's World Cup.

As host broadcaster for the September 9-October 23 event, Sky's coverage of all 48 games will be beamed around the world via local rights holders.

In several cases networks will have their own commentary teams in situ, but the Sky commentary feed is available to all rights holders.

A source told The New Zealand Herald the IRB was concerned the commentators' habits of calling each other by their nicknames would confuse a global audience who were not necessarily familiar with the personalities behind the microphone.
