Jack Pearson and Freddy Todhunter have launched Otago off to a flying start at the national rowing championships.

The Dunstan rowers won bronze in the men’s and women’s under-22 single sculls respectively at Lake Karapiro yesterday, as the pointy end of the competition heats up.

Pearson finished his race in 7min 03.04sec to secure third behind Waikato rowers Oscar Ruston, who stormed to gold in 6min 55.40sec, and Finn Hamill, who was second in 7min 02.55sec.

Todhunter clocked a time of 7min 56.93sec.

Holly Chaafe (West End) won gold in 7min 52.92sec and Mackenzie Tuffin (Wellington’s Star) claimed silver in 7min 55.40sec.

Dunstan will be well represented in the finals again today.

Pearson will be among those crews, gunning for a medal in the men’s under-22 double sculls alongside Angus Kenny.

Todhunter, also racing in the under-22 double sculls and senior coxed eight, will join Elsie Talbot in the women’s senior double sculls against fellow Dunstan duo Stina Steffen and Olivia Key.

Henry Clatworthy and Marley King-Smith, who starred for Wakatipu at the Maadi Cup last year, will also come up against Dunstan team-mates Hamish Yeatman and Mathew King in the men’s senior double sculls this morning.

Oamaru has also been strong, racing two crews in the women’s novice four final this morning and one in the men’s novice four final.
