Otago pulls gold medals in regatta

Otago rowers have capped off a successful weekend at the South Island secondary schools regatta.

The rowers, many of whom made the switch from club to secondary school crews for the event, hauled in 39 medals, including 13 gold, nine silver and 17 bronze at Lake Ruataniwha.

Wakatipu High School cleaned up across the two days, picking up six gold, three silver and five bronze medals.

Marley King-Smith and Xavier Small showed their class in various boats, winning four golds each.

King-Smith won the boys under-17 and under-18 single sculls, before pairing with Small to win the boys under-18 double sculls.

They joined Toby Rorrison, Ashton White and Emily Howick to claim gold in the boys under-18 coxed quadruple sculls.

Small and White won the boys under-17 double sculls, before teaming up again with Rorrison, Howick and Keegan Green to win the boys under-17 coxed quadruple sculls.

Columba College also had a good outing across the age groups.

Emma Sayer, Matilda Sutton, Isla Nicholson, Taylor Skevington, Delilah Brown, Georgia Drummond and Hannah Bloxham won the girls under-15 coxed octuple sculls and Charlie Sinclair, Bridgette Sutton, Jendi Minty, Sara Reynolds and Isabella Davey secured the girls under-17 coxed quadruple sculls title.

Minty, Sutton, Davey, Millie Scott and Briar Duncan won the girls under-18 coxed quadruple sculls and Scott and Duncan won the girls under-18 double sculls title.

Dunstan rowers continued to show their strength in the switch to the secondary school event, winning two golds, two silvers and a bronze.

Tahlia Nelson won the girls under-16 single sculls and Phoebe Harrex, Bella Breen, Poppy Tuffin, Sophie Tait and Emer Bryant claimed the girls under-18 novice coxed quadruple sculls title.

Harriet Thompson, of Otago Girls’ High School, backed up her South Island rowing championship title, winning the under-18 single sculls.

Oamaru showed plenty of promise — St Kevin’s College picked up a silver and a bronze, Waitaki Boys’ High School nabbed a silver and Waitaki Girls’ High School won a bronze.

Dunedin schools also came to the fore, picking up a range of medals — Otago Boys’ High School (four bronze), John McGlashan College (three bronze) and St Hilda’s Collegiate (one silver, two bronze). Cromwell College also picked up a bronze.
