Racing: A century for Williamson

Southland horseman Nathan Williamson brought up a milestone at Addington last night and broke new ground for his province in the process.

The Ryal Bush horseman brought up a century of wins for the season - the first by a horseman based in Southland - behind Luisanabelle Midfrew in a Breeders Crown heat.

Williamson (28) started seriously entertaining the prospect of reaching the century when he collected four wins at Forbury Park on June 16, taking him to 85 wins with a month and a-half left in the season.

The result was never in doubt in the non-tote last night, as the second horse, Glenferrie Classic, was simply going around for the second-place money after racing at Forbury Park on Thursday night.

Williamson, formerly of Oamaru, was thrilled to create history with two weeks left in the season.

"Obviously in Southland history, it's never been done before, so I'm proud to have achieved that,'' he said after the heat.

"There's been a lot of help along the way so I've got to thank all the people who have helped me, but I'm glad to have done it.''

Williamson is the second member of his family to rein home 100 winners in a season.

His brother, Matthew, collected 113 wins in the 2012-13 season.

Matthew Williamson was proactive in helping his older brother to the milestone, encouraging trainers he regularly drives for to put Nathan on.

"I've had a lot of mates and family encouraging me and helping out where they could, so it's worked out really well.''

The Williamsons are the second set of brothers to have 100-win seasons after John and Dexter Dunn.
