Daryl Craigie and Michael Lee have the need for speed.

The Dunedin motorcyclists finished second and third respectively in the F2 sports junior class at the Cemetery Circuit in Whanganui recently.

The race, described as one of the top street races in New Zealand since its inception in 1951, is a short and sharp circuit for riders, who completed eight laps of the 1.6km course.

Craigie produced a best time of 54.171sec to edge in front of Lee (53.936sec) on differential on their F2 600cc motorbikes.

Jeff Croot, of Whanganui, won the class, producing the fastest time of 52.267sec.

Lee was rapt he and Craigie, who was competing for the first time in the North Island, finished on the podium.

"It’s pretty good for a couple of Dunedin riders to go up there, and Daryl especially," Lee said.

"Being his first time there he did very well."

Lee, who has raced around the world, enjoyed seeing Craigie’s success and being able to support him through the race.

"It was exciting because ... I was able to sort of help him a bit, take him him for a drive around the circuit and encourage him

"That’s what I enjoy about it."

It took a lot of hard work for both riders to get to the competition and was a good opportunity for them to race on a different track, Lee said.
