Jesse Ryder's return to the international stage has been put on ice after being injured playing domestic cricket for Otago.

The 29-year-old batsman had been named in a New Zealand XI to take on the touring West Indies in a warm-up match but was forced to withdraw with knee and finger injuries.

Both injuries were picked up in Otago's nine-wicket Plunket Shield win over Canterbury in Rangiora this week.

Otago Cricket says Ryder picked up a minor left knee injury while bowling on the first day and suffered discomfort as the game wore on. He also was struck on a finger while making 120 in Otago's first innings and aggravated the injury in the field.

Both injuries are not considered to be serious, but Otago physiotherapist James Montgomery says it has been decided not to risk Ryder.

Ryder was assaulted in Christchurch eight months ago, suffering serious head and lung injuries. He was placed in an induced coma in intensive care for three days.

Ryder, who has 18 test, 39 one-day and 20 Twenty20 appearances for the Black Caps, has since served a six-month ban for testing positive to a performance-enhancing stimulant.

He was facing a two-year ban, but said he did not know the weight loss pills he took in March contained a prohibited stimulant.

Otago captain Derek de Boorder replaces Ryder in the NZ XI for the three-day match starting at Lincoln on November 27.
