The candidates for the recent Invercargill City Council by-election spent $21,800 on their campaigns — with one candidate responsible for almost 30% of that amount.

The 14 candidates’ election expenses for this year’s by-election were published by the council yesterday.

Radio announcer and former New Zealand Idol contestant Steve Broad was elected, but it was second-placed David Meades who threw the most behind his campaign with $6238 spent on electorate advertising.

Ninth-placed candidate Andrea Murrell spent the second-most with $3663 and Sir Tim Shadbolt’s partner Asha Dutt, who placed fifth, was next in spending with $2753.

At the other end of the scale, David Pottinger and Tom Morton declared they did not receive any donations to support them, nor did they spend any money on their campaigns.

Other mayoral candidates spent varying amounts — Lisa Tou-McNaughton $2303.40, Sebastien Fabre $2196.60, Terrence King $1835, Steve Broad $1062.60, Rob Te Maiharoa $744.83, David Hicks $308.90, Carl Heenan $234.60, Ian Reeves $234.60 and Graham Lewis $234.60.

All candidate expenditures were related to advertising and campaign supplies.
