Scooting along for the fun of it

Meet "Harold" and "Rhonda the Honda", 50cc motorbikes, proudly introduced by their owner Tom Akass, of Wanaka, shortly before the start of the 10th anniversary Klinky’s Upper Clutha Scooter Hooter rally at 10.30am on Saturday.

Mr Akass said he would be riding his regular daily commute "Harold" and he had asked a neighbour to take "Rhonda" out for the day.

Between 50 and 60 riders came from as far away as Christchurch and Invercargill to take part in the rally, which was started a decade ago by Paul van Klink.

This year Mr van Klink had mapped out a 90km route around the main roads and back roads of Hawea and Wanaka but warned they would pass only one service station on the way.

Mr Klink said the rally was a not-for-profit event and any money raised would go towards plants for the Fish and Game Bullock Creek Reserve and the Wanaka Men’s Shed.
