Snow appeared on mountains around Wānaka yesterday morning, bringing hope to the hearts of those hankering for winter fun.

A few centimetres of snow fell overnight Tuesday on Mt Cardrona and transformed the ski resort’s base area into a wonderland.

Cardrona and Treble Cone general manager of experiences Laura Hedley said the temperatures had plummeted in the cold southerly air.

"We woke up to a dusting of snow across the mountain. This change in weather is getting our team excited for another fantastic winter at Cardrona and Treble Cone."

The Crown Range Rd was open and clear yesterday afternoon, with a light skiff of snow at the summit.

The temperature at Wānaka Airport early yesterday afternoon was 10.9degC, as recorded by MetService.

Rain is forecast today but the sun should come out tomorrow, with temperatures expected to rise to 19°C on Saturday and 21°C on Sunday.
