Duck derby puts a splash of fun into fundraising

A new breed of ducks were swimming in Invercargill at the weekend.

The Rotary Club of Invercargill North held its inaugural Duck Derby on Saturday at Otepuni Stream.

Service and fundraising director Lynne Lewin said 75 rubber ducks floated down the stream. They were launched from the Conon St side in a race to the finish line at Kelvin St.

Participants sponsored the ducks and all the proceeds were going to the Give a Kids a Chance charity.

‘‘Raising money of course is the big thing — but doing it in a fun way is amazing.’’

Many children went to Otepuni Stream to take part in the event.

Austin Shearing (7) and Taylah Kelly (9) were among them.

‘‘This is the first time ever that I will take part in a duck race and I am really excited. It is so much fun,’’ Taylah said.

The Rotary Club hoped to raise $10,000 from the event.
