The ''dangerous condition'' of a road near Waipahi has left a resident concerned it will take an accident to occur before the road is fixed.

Frustrated Beacon Hill Rd resident Alexa Wallace recently contacted the Otago Daily Times with her concerns, stating she had spent more than two years trying to get the sealed end of the road fixed.

Parts of the ''fishtail seal'' or seal extension had lifted, and large potholes had formed.

She had put in numerous service requests to the Clutha District Council to fix potholes that appeared more than two years ago, but was recently told it was under the jurisdiction of the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).

The agency had sealed the ends of several gravel roads along State Highway 1 several years ago, Mrs Wallace said.

''They sealed the road without fixing existing potholes on either side of the road. It's an accident waiting to happen.''

Beacon Hill Rd was a no-exit road which was ''quite busy'' with farming traffic.

NZTA Otago-Southland highway manager Ian Duncan said the agency normally maintained seal 10m from the highway edge line unless the seal had been extended down a local side road to address safety concerns.

''Where there is an issue with the maintenance of a sealed intersection the transport agency and the local council will ensure it is appropriately managed.''

Mr Duncan said the agency was talking to the Clutha District Council about the particular issues around such intersections in the area to ensure they were safely managed.

An NZTA spokesman this week said improvement work at the Beacon Hill Rd site was planned for late next month or May.

When contacted by the Otago Daily Times yesterday, Mrs Wallace said she was relieved the road would finally get looked at.

''If we can get it fixed before winter, that would be great. It's difficult trying to get through all the water pooling in the potholes.''

Clutha District Council district assets manager Jules Witt said NZTA had sealed the ends of several roads to reduce loose gravel on State Highway 1.

The council had spoken to NZTA about Beacon Hill Rd as it was the agency's responsibility to maintain the seal.

The agency had fixed similar roads around Milton, Mr Witt said.

Roading remains a concern for residents throughout Clutha, with only 49% satisfied with the maintenance level of unsealed roads, a recent council survey has found.

The survey also found 91 of 253 people thought roading around the district needed improving.

Mr Witt said assistance rates from the NZTA were being reviewed nationally.

''They are looking to put these in place for the next financial year. There could potentially be some significant drops in [government] funding.''

If government funding dropped, there could be an increase in rates to maintain the existing standard of the district's roading, Mr Witt said.

Roading funding is due to be discussed at the council's district assets committee meeting next Thursday.
