Rates rises and Three Waters dominated the Clutha District Council’s (CDC) recent soapbox sessions, including the final meeting at Te Pou ō Mata-Au Clutha District War Memorial & Community Centre last Wednesday.

The council’s Long Term Plan (LTP) was released on April 15 and one purpose of the meetings was to encourage Clutha residents to make feedback submissions.

CDC estimates Three Waters costs exceeding $600million over the next 10 years, accounting for half the general rates rises and over 80% of year-one increases.

Mayor Bryan Cadogan said rates, debt and partnership were the only options to cover costs, but the district’s extensive infrastructure and small ratepayer base meant other districts did not want to partner with Clutha.

He said this was unsustainable without government intervention and councillors agreed intervention could include government review and reform of the new regulations.

"Make a submission and get it in to us," Lawrence-Tuapeka Ward councillor Jock Martin said.

"That gives us what we need to pass on to central government when the time comes."

Residents and ratepayers have until May 15 to give feedback on the council’s Long Term Plan.

An LTP summary and a feedback-consultation-submission form was published in the Clutha Leader on April 25.

All information is available at council offices, community libraries and www.cluthadc.govt.nz/LTP.
