A new museum exhibition is hoped to get locals fired up about the history of pottery in the region.

Museum volunteer and Milton resident Wendy Hellyer opened her exhibition on local pottery last week.

She has created the exhibition to complete her certificate in level 4 museum practice.

Ms Hellyer has volunteered for three years for the museum, alongside other volunteers in the museum.

She said she was "interested in pottery and wanted to show the diversity of pottery in the area".

"We used to have a big pottery factory back in the day," she said.

"It began in 1874 and was founded by Mr William M White.

"Production dwindled in 1893 and the last kiln was dismantled in 1917 as all of the machinery went to Christchurch."

There was "plenty" of history regarding pottery and Ms Hellyer hoped people could come along and see some of the works.

Ms Hellyer said the exhibition had to be mounted in a secure lock box to be classified as an exhibition.

"I love pottery, so it was a good chance to show the exhibition, as it is something I was interested in," Ms Hellyer said.

The exhibition will be open until March 31 and held at the Tokomairiro Museum and Information Centre.
