Life all about enjoying ‘the little things’

Cancer has not stopped a South Otago golfer from winning at life and golf.

Bronwyn Bichan, of Clinton, says that after 37 years of playing golf she "should be like Lydia Ko by now", but reckons you’d be silly to back her with a bookie.

Mrs Bichan is recovering from breast cancer, having just had her second breast removed exactly 17 years after the first one was taken off.

She was told she would have to lose the second breast in August last year when doctors informed her that screening showed she would eventually get cancer in it.

She had been slowly getting back into golf and won the Toko Women’s 50th jubilee cup golf tournament in Milton last week, beating more than 40 players from 10 clubs around the South.

Mrs Bichan had previously won the tournament in 2022 and was "flabbergasted" to win it again.

"When they called out my name I thought that can’t be right.

"I’ve not long got back into it, so I was pretty shocked to win.

"I just went and played the game. The weather was nice and I was relaxed, and the ball just ran.

"It was quite dry at Milton, so it was a good day to play."

Mrs Bichan said having cancer had not stopped her from doing the things she enjoyed.

"After those kind of things, you start to think ‘Why me?’

"It can definitely put life on pause for a while, but you’ve got to just carry on.

"You can’t stop, and you certainly can’t give up."

"I’ve had heaps of anxiety about it, but at the end of the day, every day above ground is a good day."

She said golf and her family kept her going.

"My son and my daughter are sorting themselves to get checked, as cancer is hereditary in some aspects."

"No matter how small or big it is, you have to continue to enjoy the little things."
