Free fire safety checks

Fire brigade volunteers are encouraging the community to get in touch with them for free fire safety checks over winter.

The Balclutha Volunteer Fire Brigade and other Fire and Emergency New Zealand (Fenz) volunteers will be door-knocking soon to give people the opportunity to be checked as being safe this coming winter.

They will be conducting the checks to ensure people are being safe with their smoke alarms, electrical equipment like heaters, checking fireplaces and more.

Volunteer firefighter Donna Weir said they did fire checks all year round but focused on winter months as fire risk was higher.

"We will go along to people’s homes, if required we can put some smoke detectors up or advise them on heating in their homes and where to get smoke detectors if they need them."

There was a team of volunteer firefighters this year who aimed to visit as many homes as they could right before winter to keep people safe.

"Sometimes people don’t realise how quickly something can go wrong, so it’s important to be safe and take precautions."

People can go on to the Fenz website and fill out a request to be checked by the team.
