The Waimate District Council is busting to start construction of a modern public toilet facility at the Glenavy rest area.

Mayor Craig Rowley said the rest area was very well frequented by travellers on State Highway 1.

"It would have to be one of the most picturesque settings for a public toilet in the country, and will blend seamlessly with the natural landscape."

The $192,000 project was made possible through the government’s Three Waters "Better Off" funding.

The rest area, nestled amidst the scenic beauty of the Waitaki River and newly developed recreation reserve, served as a vital stopover for travellers and tourists, Mr Rowley said.

Recognising its importance, the Waimate District Council aimed to enhance the overall visitor experience.

The new Exeloo amenity would feature two cubicles, both of which were wheelchair-accessible facilities.

Local contractors had been engaged to prepare the foundations and install and connect the facility, and completion was expected by early July.

The existing water system and septic tank would be reused, making the build more environmentally friendly, Mr Rowley said.

The new building would be located beside the current toilet block, which would be demolished once the new facility was operational.
