Two former Queenstown high school students and a one-time local preschooler were part of a 4x100-metre Otago men’s relay team who won gold at the recent Australian athletics champs in Adelaide.

The quartet — from left, ex-Wakatipu High student Hayato Yoneto, Dunedin’s Felix McDonald, ex-Wakatipu High student Jackson Rogers and Dunedin-based John Gerber, who attended kindy in Queenstown — also broke a 22-year Otago record in the process.

They finished in 40.46 seconds, breaking the record by a mere one-100ths of a second.

Yoneto, meanwhile, who’s a 100m and 200m sprinter, will be a New Zealand rep at the Oceania champs in Fiji in June.
