Historic boat show set to make waves

Classic boat lovers in Queenstown are hoping for fair winds and blue skies for an event that takes them back in time today.

The second annual Southern Lakes Classic and Historic Boat Show is setting up at Kelvin Grove from 11am.

About 40 historic and classic boats are expected to be on display for the event, organised by Greg Doran and supported by the Wakatipu Community Maritime Preservation Society.

Society committee member Jeff Williams said the event gave nautical enthusiasts a chance to catch up and get up close and personal with some of New Zealand’s maritime heritage.

He said one of the earliest tourist boats to operate on Lake Wakatipu, Meteor III, which was brought to Queenstown from England by Frank Haworth in 1966, will be on display during the event.

Mr Williams said his society eventually bought the boat, which is believed to be NZ’s first hydrofoil, to ensure it did not leave the district.

"It’s great to get it out of retirement from time to time."

The winner of last year’s "best wooden boat", a 1930’s Classic Craft Hacker, will also be making a return to the Queenstown event.

The Maritime Preservation Society is still taking entries for the event for anyone wanting to enter their own classic boats — including yachts — any time before 11am today.

However, Mr Williams said anyone is welcome to pop along for a nosy at the vintage craft during the boat show.
