A fire which gutted a house in Herbert early today is being treated as suspicious by Fire and Emergency New Zealand.
Units from Weston, Kakanui and Oamaru were sent to the house fire about 2.05am.
A Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said two crews in breathing apparatus were sent into the building.
The fire was brought under control.
The Kakanui brigade was sent out again at 8.20am as the police guard at the scene had seen smoke rising from one of the rooms.
