Spectacular ocean racing predicted

With no obstacles in sight and an excellent weather forecast, Oamaru should be able to put on a good show for visitors and competitors in this Saturday’s ocean race, to be held just outside  the harbour.

The North Otago Yacht and Power Boat Club spokesman and race convener Gary Story said Oamaru was the only race in the eight-leg  series, the New Zealand Boat Marathon Commission, to be held on the sea.

He was expecting up to 20 competitors,  from as far away as  Auckland and Otaki, to take part.

The view for the crowd would also be good, he promised, saying the Oamaru event was one of the best for spectators, with racing close to the  foreshore.

Conditions for the race boats should be good and there was every chance most would become airborne at some stage, Mr Story said.

"In between where they round the mark in by Holmes Wharf, if there’s any roll there —  even a half-metre roll —  the boats should get completely airborne."

After Oamaru, the next race will be  at Lake Waihola on July 22 followed by the last race at Invercargill’s Oreti Estuary on August 5.

Racing this weekend starts at 10.30am. A prizegiving would be held in the yacht club’s clubrooms from 4.30pm.
