Hungry truck drivers stopping for pies are hindering Oamaru Hospital’s ambulance exits and entrances, police say.

Sergeant Tony Woodbridge, of Oamaru, said the latest complaint from the ambulance service was just before 9am yesterday when a car transporter parked on yellow lines, "obstructing the view of any ambulance trying to get out or in."

Sgt Woodbridge said police generally received complaints  of truck drivers blocking the entranceways or line of sight for ambulance drivers in the evenings and early mornings.

"We’re always talking to trucking companies. There are numerous companies and truckies. They appear to be stopping to get pies at a local service station."

People need to use their "common sense" and empathy when making a stop, he said.

"That could be your loved one trying to get to hospital."
