The official search for a missing fisherman near the Waitaki River mouth has been called off but family and friends will continue looking for him.

Police were notified a fisherman was overdue from a day fishing trip on the lower Waitaki River about 7pm last Monday.

A search was conducted with teams from the Otago Rescue Helicopter, North Otago LandSAR, South Canterbury Coastguard and Aoraki Police Search and Rescue.

Surf Life Saving and LandSAR continued with the search efforts on Wednesday and Thursday before they were called off on Friday, a police spokesperson said.

"At this stage there is no further search planned. Future searches will be based off information received."

Thursday’s search included a coastal search by LandSAR.

The spokesperson thanked everyone who assisted in the search.

"We would also like to offer our support to whānau and friends of the missing fisherman."

A relative of the missing man, who wished to remain anonymous, said family and friends would continue "scouring the beaches".
