New St John station plans proceeding

St John is still working on plans for a new ambulance station in Oamaru.

Work on the project started three years ago and last year Oamaru area chairman Terry Kent said at least two feasibility studies would be done for a new ambulance station in the town.

The present station, in Coquet St, was built 36 years ago.

It is the base for four ambulances, 6.5 permanent staff and up to 24 volunteers.

St John South Island region general manager David Thomas said fundraising was ongoing for a new station in Oamaru.

He did not answer questions about the feasibility studies, how much money had been raised for the project, or when a final decision would be made about whether the organisation would stay in the existing building or move.

"Any selection of property for any new station, and negotiations around any potential site, is commercially sensitive and St John is not in a position to comment further at this time.''
