Man (18) admits charges

An 18-year-old North Otago man admitted charges of multiple indecent assault, and sexual violation by unlawful sexual connection offences when he appeared in the Oamaru District Court yesterday.

The man has been granted interim name suppression and is due to appear in court on October 11 for sentencing.

The charges related to multiple victims and multiple incidents in North Otago, all in 2017.

The police summary of facts read by Sergeant Paul Knox detailed offending against three children and a 17-year-old male youth.

Between February 1 and April 11, the defendant boarded at a friend's house where two of his child victims lived.

It was here he committed a range of indecent acts against two 10-year-old girls and an 11-year-old.

On several occasions he would hold the family kitten and coerce one of the 10-year-old girls into letting him kiss her by telling her he would give the kitten back if she did.

Over Waitangi weekend, between February 4 and 6, two of the victims were sleeping overnight in separate tents in the backyard.

The victim's father was sleeping in one of the tents, but later that evening went inside to sleep instead.

The defendant then went into one of the tents and groped the child.

The assault ended when she escaped from the tent.

On another occasion the third victim was visiting the address and the defendant came up behind her in the kitchen putting his arms around her and kissed her on the neck.

He made comments to the other children that he thought the third victim was ''the hottest girl'' and ''sexy''.

He asked one of the other victims for the third victim's phone number, but not to let her parents know.

He told one of the first victims he wanted to have sex with the third victim.

After the defendant moved out of the address in April, the victims disclosed what had happened.

On April 2, the man and four associates, including a 17-year-old teenager, went drinking at a friend's address.

Around midnight they all returned to one of the addresses of one of the group where they all went to sleep, one on a mattress and the four others, including the offender and victim, on a bed.

While the victim slept the offender, without the victim's knowledge or consent, committed indecencies against him.

The following day the defendant texted the victim informing him of what he had done.

The defendant was remanded in custody to await sentencing.

Interim name suppression was granted to protect family members of the defendant.
