$9699 reparation owed

A 19-year-old Oamaru bakery worker will have to pay almost $10,000 in reparation for his role in a car crash which injured eight people, including himself.

In the Oamaru District Court yesterday,  Chad Pink appeared for sentence on seven charges of careless driving causing injury  on February 4, 2017, in Georgetown-Pukeuri Rd and Pukeuri-Oamaru Rd, Pukeuri.

The police summary of facts stated Pink was the driver of a vehicle heading east on State Highway 83, Pukeuri, and after pausing at the intersection with State Highway 1, Pink turned right.

He pulled into the path of another vehicle heading north on SH1, causing the crash.

Pink’s defence lawyer Emma Middlemass told the court her client thought the other driver was going to turn.

"He accepts it’s a  mistaken error of his driving."

Pink lost seven teeth in the crash and was trapped in the vehicle.

Judge Joanna Maze said other crash victims required hospital treatment. One had a fractured spine.

Other injuries listed in the summary were a fractured skull, fractured arm and leg injuries and a seatbelt burn.

She ordered Pink to pay $9699.91 reparation.
