A police spokeswoman said they were called to assist Fire and Emergency New Zealand with the incident about 12.10pm.
Traffic began congesting as both lanes on the Fruitlands-Roxburgh Rd, near Shingle Creek, were blocked for a time, she said.
At about 12.20pm the traffic had started flowing again in one direction, she said.
