Tractor likely write-off after fire

The owner of a tractor that went up in flames near Alexandra this morning managed to put the blaze out before fire crews arrived.

A Fire and Emergency New Zealand spokesman said crews were called to a tractor fire in a shed in Blackmans about 10.05am.

Crews from Alexandra, Clyde and Dunstan volunteer fire stations were dispatched.

Before they arrived the fire was largely extinguished by the tractor’s owner who received minor injuries in the process.

Assistance was given at the scene by fire crews but an ambulance was not required, the spokesman said.

Tractor owner Lindsay Watt said the fire was ‘‘very unfortunate and unexpected’’ and he was lucky it was put out with a garden hose and some fire extinguishers before the shed caught fire.

The tractor was likely written off and he was trying to get in touch with his insurance company.

‘‘It made the blood buzz round a bit, it’s not something you expect,’’ Mr Watt said.
