A man has died after being found unconscious in downtown Auckland.
Emergency services were called to the corner of Victoria St West and Queen St just after 6am today.
A St John spokesman said one person was taken to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.
Police later confirmed the patient was a man, and by the time officers arrived at the hospital he had died.
They are making inquiries to formally identify him.
A New Zealand Herald reporter at the scene said paramedics carried out CPR on the man for some time before putting him into a waiting ambulance.
St John said it appeared he had suffered a medical event.
