Wrong mark for scammer

An international scammer realised he had picked the wrong mark after making a call to Dunedin Central Police Station.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said the station received a call to its landline office number from a "man with a foreign-sounding voice".

The man on the phone connected with a police employee and told the staff member that there was a problem with its internet connection.

Police questioned the legality of the call and when they informed the man that he had called the New Zealand police, the caller disconnected the line.

"This is a reminder that anyone is open to scam calls, and be safe when disclosing personal details over the phone," Snr Sgt Bond said.
