Pirates rooms burgled

Thieves broke into Pirates Rugby Club on Tuesday night, stealing alcohol and food and causing damage to the clubrooms in John Wilson Ocean Dr, St Kilda.

Club chairman Conrad Stedman said the damage would be costly to the Dunedin club.

"They have broken in through the back door and then punted through the kitchen door.

"There's no residential homes out there, so no-one can hear the broken glass,'' he said.

It was not the first time the club had been targeted.

Last year, doors were tampered with and glass windows broken about the same time the Pirates Squash Club next door was burgled.

The squash club was robbed in November and December and on at least three other occasions last year.

Southern district deployment manager Inspector Kelvin Lloyd said police were investigating. The repeated burglaries were "really hitting [the clubs] financially''.

Dunedin police (03) 471-4800, Crimestoppers 0800 555-111.
