Cyclists raising awareness of cancer in Pacific Island and Maori men thanked God with song in Dunedin last night - even after He made the trip harrowing.

USO (understanding, strengthening, overcoming) bike-ride organiser Meriama Taufale said "energy-sapping" head and crosswinds meant a late arrival into Dunedin yesterday.

Eleven Pacific Island and Maori men started the fortnight of cycling in Cape Reinga and were challenged with strong winds and cold temperatures.

However, the riders' spirits were high and re-energised by the 50 people who attended the Dunedin forum in the Commerce building at the University of Otago last night, she said.

The riders would leave Dunedin for the final leg to Bluff this morning - the last 204km of the 2125km journey.

Team leader Talalelei Taufale said Pacific and Maori men suffered high cancer mortality rates.

"Our message is simple. We encourage you to go and get checked."
