Minor injuries for elderly couple in Taieri crash

An elderly couple were fortunate to escape with minor injuries following a major crash on the Taieri at the weekend.

Senior Sergeant Anthony Bond, of Dunedin, said the incident happened on State Highway 87, between Mosgiel and Outram, about 3.30pm on Saturday.

‘‘A 91-year-old male has been driving along with an 83-year-old female passenger.

‘‘Initial investigation shows the male is believed to have fallen asleep, and as a result he’s hit the gravel, causing them to over-correct, crossing the centre line, back into the grass ditch and a fence on the left hand side.’’

Snr Sgt Bond said they possibly hit a tree also, but investigations were ongoing.

‘‘The male was cleared by St John ambulance who attended, but the female was taken to Dunedin Hospital with a suspected broken wrist.’’

No alcohol was involved, he said.
