Five men were injured when a car rolled near Outram yesterday.

Two men were taken to Dunedin Hospital with serious injuries while a further three would be treated for moderate injuries, a police officer at the scene said.

The men were aged between 22 and 34 years old and live in Dunedin and Mosgiel, police say.

The single vehicle crash appeared to have happened after the driver lost control after driving into the grass shoulder of State Highway 87, near the intersection of Tirohanga Rd.

The car then crossed the road before ploughing through a fence and rolling in a paddock. Three of the men were thrown from the vehicle.

The cause of the crash remains unknown at this stage as police continue investigating.

Police thanked members of the public, including vehicle of medical professionals who were on their way to a function in Outram, for stopping and helping.

The road has been reopened.

Maimun Nisha Maslin, who lives about 500m from the crash site, said she saw helicopter and at least three fire engines, three police cars and a couple of ambulances attending to the accident.

"There was lights flashing everywhere and a lot of commotion, my husband asked me to see what's happening when he heard the sound of a helicopter," said Mrs Maslin.

She said that within half an hour of the accident, the wreckage had been cleared.

Senior Sergeant Ian Temple, of the Southern District Command Centre, said emergency services were alerted at 5.06pm.
