The spa pool at Mosgiel’s new aquatic centre could be out of action until May.

The Dunedin City Council confirmed yesterday there had been a problem with the spa’s tiles and new tiling was needed.

All other pools at the complex, Te Puna o Whakaehu, remained open.

The centre opened in June last year and tiles at the spa pool came loose within three months.

"We have previously carried out temporary repairs to keep the spa pool open as much as possible, but the issue now requires a permanent fix," a council spokesman said yesterday.

"The spa will remain closed until new tiles arrive and the repairs are carried out," he said.

"At this stage, we expect the spa to reopen in May," he said.

Ratepayers would not foot the bill for repairs.

"It’s not uncommon for defects to be identified once a new project is completed, and those that are become the contractor’s responsibility to fix," the spokesman said.

Asked about usage of the new centre, the council said it was proving popular with Mosgiel residents and the wider community.

There had been 107,550 visits up until the end of February this year.

January and February had been the busiest months since the opening.

There was initially some comment about a perceived need for the facility to be more engaging for young people.

New inflatables had been well received, the council spokesman said.
