Former circus master steps into the ring

The four new Dunedin City councillors and one returning face are set to hit the ground running, while one incumbent is ‘‘gutted’’ to have missed out.

Mayor-elect Jules Radich will be joined by fellow Team Dunedin candidates bakery owner Kevin Gilbert and jewellery store owner Brent Weatherall.

The other new councillors are former council staffer and self-employed business owner Cherry Lucas, and former circus master Mandy Mayhem-Bullock.

Entertainer Bill Acklin has returned to the council after a nine-year break.

Mr Gilbert was patiently waiting beside his phone on Saturday when he received the call at 2.09pm telling him he had made the cut.

‘‘I wasn’t expecting the phone call to be that early. I was expecting it later in the day,’’ he said.

He was looking forward to getting among the Dunedin City Council and learning all the ins an outs of the system.

Mr Weatherall was ‘‘over the moon’’ to hear both he and three of his team-mates had been elected.

‘‘We were hoping for better, but four out of seven [Team Dunedin members] is a great result,’’ he said.

Ms Lucas said she found out the ‘‘fantastic news’’ much earlier than she had expected.

‘‘I’ve worked in senior positions at the council and I know what I’m getting into.

‘‘I’m ready to hit the ground running,’’ she said.

Mr Acklin was out of town when he heard the news.

He missed out on the top job of mayor but was pleased to be returning to council.

‘‘Nothing like being away for nine years. That gives you a whole new perspective to come back.’’

Mandy Mayhem-Bullock was at home when she received the news, and was surprised by the make-up of the new council.

However, believed she ‘‘can get along with anybody’’.

She hoped Mr Radich would have the best interests of the city at heart.

‘‘I’m sad to see that Rachel [Elder] is out but amazed that I managed to scrape in,’’ she said.

Cr Elder was the lone incumbent standing for re-election to not return.

The two-term councillor and self-described centrist was ‘‘a bit gutted’’ by the result.

She believed no councillors had felt certain about their chances of re-election.
