Boat club eyes $40,000 for water works

The Ravensbourne Boating Club’s long battle for showers and toilets is not over as it attempts to raise $40,000 for the project.

In late November, the club finally received a lease for the Dunedin City Council premises, ending an ambiguity in ownership spanning decades.

This means it can start the process of connecting to wastewater, which it has been trying to do for seven years.

After that it can use facilities such as toilets and showers.

Club commodore Warwick Graham said it had a quote for the work, but wanted to get other options.

At this stage it was estimated at $40,000.

The club planned to apply for grants and raise funds, he said.

"That’s a lot of barbecues to raise 40 grand," he said.

This would hopefully be the last season in which the club would need to use portable toilets.

It was unlikely the new system would be installed by the end of this sailing season, which ended about Easter, but it was planned to be completed before end of the year.
