The students involved in sadistic flat initiation rituals in North Dunedin last week may face "life-changing consequences".

An investigation into the initiations which occurred at a Cumberland St party last Thursday was ongoing, University of Otago proctor Dave Scott said.

Campus Watch staff were called to the party at which a student was reportedly urinated on and covered in vomit.

Videos and pictures from the event circulated on social media app Snapchat and depicted young people in their underwear consuming alcohol until they vomited.

Mr Scott last week labelled the events ‘‘sadistic’’ and said those involved might face expulsion.

"The investigation is ongoing," he said yesterday in response to Otago Daily Times’ questions.

"This is a very serious matter that may result in life-changing consequences for those involved.

"For this reason, a comprehensive and thorough investigation is taking place."

A police spokeswoman said Dunedin police had not been involved in the matter.
