CD reviews: Dave Rawlings

A sly devil of a guitarist, one who prefers to show off his talents by way of omission of notes rather than addition, Dave Rawlings is, notably, the partner (in life and music) of Gillian Welch.

Over the years each has taken a turn supporting the other on various projects. Rawlings’ latest is no exception, although this nuanced reading of a lesson book in Americana folk styles benefits greatly from a guestlist that features Willie Watson and Ketch Secor (Old Crow Medicine Show) as well as Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith (Dawes).

From the close harmonies of Lindsey Button to the  country-rock vibe of Cumberland Gap, Rawlings is clearly having a good time.

• Dave Rawlings. Poor David’s Almanack. Acony.

• Four and a half stars (out of five)
