
Emergency services were called to the crash on State Highway 73 (the West Coast Rd) between Malvern Hills Rd and Duke St in Sheffield about 6.40am.
In a statement just after 11am, police said one person died after the crash involving "a vehicle and a pedestrian".
The New Zealand Herald reported it was a ute.
The victim was a customer of the World Famous Sheffield Pie Shop.
"Today is a very sad day for us at Sheffield Pies. This morning, one of our customers tragically lost their life while crossing the road near our shop," the business posted to its social media.
"Our hearts go out to their family, friends, and loved ones - and to everyone in our community who may be feeling the weight of this loss.
"Emergency services and police have been on the scene.
"Out of respect for the family and our staff we will be shutting our doors for the rest of the day.
"Thank you for your understanding, and please hold space for kindness, patience, and care today."
State Highway 73 between Queen St and Curve St was closed for the morning and reopened by 12.35pm, the NZ Transport Agency/Waka Kotahi said.
The police Serious Crash Unit attended.
