Death of Christchurch man sparks homicide investigation

Police have launched a homicide investigation after a man died in Christchurch on Sunday night.

The victim died after he was found with critical injuries at an address on Innes Rd, Mairehau, Detective Senior Sergeant Tania Jellyman said.

Emergency services were called to the block of units about 9.15pm, Jellyman said.

The initial report to police is understood to have been about an assault.

"Upon arrival, a man was located with critical injuries," Jellyman said.

"Despite urgent treatment, he died at the scene."

The police operation is focused on a unit at the back of the complex.

Scene guards were in place while police investigated the circumstances of the death.

Part of Innes Rd was temporarily closed last night as police responded to the call-out.
