53-year-old arrested after police respond to report of man with gun at Christchurch Hospital

A 53-year-old man has been arrested after an armed police call-out at Christchurch Hospital on Wednesday.

Armed police swooped on the Oxford Tce area at 10.30am after a report a person had entered the Christchurch Outpatients' building with a gun.

It was later determined no firearm was involved.

The 53-year-old has been taken into custody and is due to appear in Christchurch District Court on September 14, a police spokesperson said.

He is facing a charge of threatening to kill/do grievous bodily harm.

A witness at the scene said the man came into the outpatients' building and allegedly threatened to shoot someone.

Canterbury District Health Board chief executive Dr Peter Bramley confirmed police were called to an incident involving a patient at the Christchurch Hospital campus.

The incident was resolved and there were no roadblocks in place.

Patients should attend their appointments at the Christchurch Hospital campus as planned, he said.
