A rising Queenstown singer-songwriter hit the airways yesterday morning as Katie McNeill's new single, Freedom, was played on Classic Hits for the first time.

McNeill was the winner of the singer-songwriter competition, Songstars, at the Memorial Hall in July.

Since then she has been working with Tomtom Studios and 15 other musicians to record the song.

She hoped to send her demo out to other radio stations and become recognised nationally.

"I'm hoping a record company will be 'like yeah, we like this girl'."

The 25-year-old had also made a video clip to go with the single with the help of another local talent, film-maker Scott Kennedy.

McNeill, a proud music degree holder, said the great thing about New Zealand was that 15% of the songs played on radio have to be Kiwi, in accordance with a national quota.

Her goal is to keep writing music, and release an album with her band, The Disputes.
