Church planning alterations

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Dunedin has applied to Lakes Environmental for resource consent to make alterations to the historic St Joseph's Church in Queenstown.

The application is for a new toilet in the former nuns' chapel at the back of the church on Melbourne St.

The church, built in 1898, is a category 2 heritage building.

A report by architect Edwin Elliott says the building is in very good condition and retains all of its original fabric.

The church had no toilet for use by its congregation.

The chapel was used only for making flower arrangements for services.

The toilet would not alter the outside of the church in any way, he said.

The chapel retained all of its original heritage features including an original fireplace, which would not be affected. "The effects of this application are no more than minor," he said.
