Queenstown has been chosen as the venue for Cookie Time's first Cookie Bar, which is also the biscuit company's first store outside its Christchurch headquarters.

The company says the new store and Cookie Bar will be a "showcase outlet" offering a "world-class retail experience" which the company plans to franchise across the world.

The Queenstown store will feature a "Pick and Mix" wall from which customers will be able to fill a bucket or box with their favourite cookies.

The company said the "fun design elements" which would be featured at the shop would be kept under wraps until opening day next Monday.

"We're absolutely thrilled with how the store and bar is coming along," Cookie Time general manager Lincoln Booth said.

"We're giving away thousands of free cookies on our first day.

"The store will be open from 8am to 7pm to ensure everyone gets their cookie fix.

"Queenstown attracts visitors from all around New Zealand and all around the world, and we're sure this new addition to the bar scene will be welcomed not only by visitors but by locals as a real drawcard."

New Zealand's first giant chocolate cookies were developed by New Zealand brothers Guy and Michael Mayell 27 years ago.

Cookie Time initially delivered fresh cookies to dairies in Christchurch.

The company had since grown to become "New Zealand's favourite" cookie brand and the Queenstown store would be "a very different offering" to its nationwide retail model, Mr Booth said.

The Queenstown location was chosen for its high number of national and international visitors and the company had invested "at a time of recessionary uncertainty", Mr Booth told the Times.

Cookie Time funds the Cookie Time Charitable Trust, a charity set up to provide opportunities for young people to discover their gifts and realise their potential, with a focus on educational opportunities.

The Cookie Time Charitable Trust was the principal sponsor of the Dyslexia Foundation of New Zealand and this year's Autism NZ Appeal.
