Over the past several decades, the ponds had become overgrown and dried up.
On Saturday, about 20 people from the Combined Dunedin Churches removed trees, scrub and mud in the hope of restoring the ponds to their former glory.
The project was inspired by Wakari Hospital activities assistant Joolz Carter-Moore.
"I walk through the garden with patients all the time and I thought what a shame. What a waste. These ponds have been here since the hospital was built. It would be nice to get it back to its original state."
It was hoped the pond's geysers could also be restored.
"And in time, the ducks will return and it will become a nice wildlife area again."
She contacted Combined Dunedin Churches member Jacqui Pittendreigh and asked if the project could be included in the organisation's Serving Our City project in which volunteers help with community ventures.
The restoration was just one of a dozen projects carried out by volunteers on Saturday which included tidying, gardening, cleaning and painting jobs.
