Police had tried to stop the man near Owaka shortly after 3.30pm, as they believed he was disqualified from driving. The man then fled from police at speeds of up to 130kmh up the Owaka Highway towards Balclutha, Sgt Dinnissen said.
Five police cars were involved in the 35km pursuit, which ended on Kaka Point Rd soon after the man drove over road spikes laid by police.
Sgt Dinnissen said the man then drove 7km with two flat front tyres, weaving across the road, before the car came to rest in a ditch. The man and his dog, which was with him in the car, were uninjured.
Sgt Dinnissen said the man was charged with driving while disqualified, failing to stop, reckless driving, and resisting police. He was also found to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest for allegedly breaching bail and is due to appear in the Dunedin District Court today.
