The first major cycling event in the Catlins is a sellout, with organisers having to turn many away.

The Catlins Great Escape will be held in the Catlins on May 23 and 24.

Organiser Kim Dodds said there had been "huge interest" in the event, which starts at Waikawa in the south Catlins and ends at Owaka.

The event is restricted to 100 riders.

Associate Tourism Minister Dr Jonathan Coleman, who had planned to open the event, has pulled out, but the two mayors whose territories the route crosses - Frana Cardno, of Southland, and Juno Hayes, of Clutha - will officially open the event at Waikawa on May 23 at 10am.

Mrs Dodds said the event was not a race but a leisurely journey through the Catlins.

Both days would involve no more than about four hours of riding, with the chance for riders to enjoy the scenery.
