Town back on TVNZ weather map

Oamaru is back on the TVNZ weather map from tonight.

The reappearance will start on One News at 6pm, then the forecast for Oamaru will continue to be shown on all TVNZ weather forecasts, including Breakfast, Midday, Te Karere, One News 4.30pm, One News 6pm, Tonight and all bulletins on TVNZ 7.

Waitaki Mayor Alex Familton wrote in December to TVNZ, asking for the town to be put back on the weather map.

It was removed some years ago.

"Having Oamaru on the map is important to local people and the Waitaki district," he said.

TVNZ replied it would consider that the next time it was overhauling the map.

Now that has come to fruition and TVNZ's head of news and current affairs, Anthony Flannery, visited Mr Familton yesterday to deliver the news.

ONE News editor Paul Patrick said Oamaru's inclusion was part of a new weather forecast presentation and new-look weather map.

The new forecast has been designed in conjunction with the MetService to provide a deeper understanding of weather patterns that influence the country in a more logical format, which was easier to understand.

"This gave us an opportunity to put Oamaru back on the map and fulfil a promise I gave to Mr Familton earlier in the year, that we would consider adding Oamaru next time we revised the weather presentation," he said.

The forecast will be told in a different way from tonight.

Weather information had traditionally been presented by province, but was changing to show areas affected by similar weather systems.

Weather from the southwest usually hit Fiordland then rolled up the West Coast towards Hokitika, Greymouth and Westport, so a forecast for the entire West Coast of the South Island would be given and a separate one for the east coast showing weather from the south hitting Invercargill, Dunedin and Oamaru.
