Cromwell toddler dies suddenly

Police are dealing with the sudden death of a child in Cromwell last night.

Senior Sergeant Craig Brown, of Dunedin, said emergency services including the Otago rescue helicopter were called to a Cromwell address about 8.10pm.

Extensive efforts were made to resuscitate the two-year-old child but were unsuccessful.

"The death is believed to be a medical event and is not being treated as suspicious," Mr Brown said.

The matter had been referred to the coroner.

The family of the incident were being supported by police from Alexandra and Cromwell with the assistance of Victim Support.
